Australian Institute of Architects 2015 Residential Architecture Award

Zaher Architects’ Wategos Residence Byron Bay has Won the Australian Institute of Architects, 2015 Residential Architecture Award for ” it’s response to the harsh costal environment, that exploits the sites perfect orientation and dramatic outlook to provide an interplay between the landscape and the internal spaces of the home.

In 2017 we completed the Wategos residence , the Wategos residence is every architect’s dream project, as the site , the builder , the clients and the budget were ideal , a combination of a great team and a great clients with magnificent site. The site had its challenges as it was small and steep and the brief required almost the spaces of 2 residences, however we were very pleased with the outcome so were the clients , the client were and still are very happy with their new house , that happy that they ring me to tell me that every six months or so. As we were pleased with the outcome we decided to enter the project to awards entries, to our surprise we ended up receiving 3 awards out of 3 entries. The House of the year award from the institute of Architects NSW Country Division, one from London , the international property award Asia Pacific , Best house in Australia and the third award from New York Architizer , a special mention award. Also we received Best house on Houzz website for 2017, an award voted for by the public and the users of the Houzz website.

Awards are great for architecture the clients and the architects
It encourages the designer or the architect to push the envelope and try harder, it affirms to the client that their house is special and appreciated by the industry for its boldness and contribution to the built environment.

For the industry good architecture and awards promote well built and designed buildings and spaces that hopefully will contribute to the urban or the suburban fabric , it might reduce energy consumption or creates beautiful and airy spaces that would be enjoyed by its habitants.
I believe most projects have the potential to be special and exceed the brief and the clients expectations, the key ingredients to that is the willingness by the architect and the client to be bold, and collaborate together as a team for a common goal. Also an integral part of this team would be the builder , the builder has to be as bold and enjoy the challenge as much as the designer or the client, as he or she is going to build the place , hence having a builder that love and enjoy pushing the envelope will Make the process a pleasant journey and in the end a beautiful building.
