Located in the hinterlands around Byron Bay, the clients wanted a house that weaved into its breathtaking context. We achieve the dynamic experience of inside and outside using a variety of design actions, most notably the generous breezeway that acts as a pivot point for the clients, an axis from which to set off on the various business of the day.
The design offers a dramatic entrance: a rhythmic timber portal frame makes a colonnade which features a wide suspended timber lined eave, floating above. The dynamic structural element extends into the house, sometimes hidden sometimes shown. It sets the stage for the experience of old and new, distinctly separate in tone and design language, but not in tension. The new embraces the old, and honours the history and memories of the original building and pool.
