CLIENT BRIEF: An alteration and addition to a 1980s 2-storey brick veneer home. Extend the house to include a new open-plan living area to take advantage of the views to the garden and pool area. A new kitchen and spacious entry, and better connect the indoor and outdoor areas.
SOLUTION: Create a dramatic new entry/arrival point with the removal of a bedroom on the first floor, directly above to create a double-storey void. The entry becomes a point of orientation and is a strong visual link to other key areas of the house. The house was extended toward the pool with a large open-plan area, comprising of a living and dining area and an open-plan kitchen. The kitchen includes a hidden walk-in pantry. By adding a 6x8m area to the north-end of the building, the living areas have doubled in size. Two wide-set bi-folding doors make up the north facade with integrated, retractable flyscreens. When open, the living area and pool are connected seamlessly.
