The Wicket Hill house renovation yielded many delights including a playful hidden wing accessible from a bookshelf. Zaher Architects created an addition that nestled around the existing aging home. Look closely, you will see the old and new in harmony through the roof forms, highlighting the history of the site.
To retain as much of the old home as possible while making the space work for a large family and frequent visitors. The layout needed to be reconfigured to accommodate a large family, maximise thermal comfort, frame the views and create much more outdoor space.
Demolishing a functional building in this instance was not the best use of the world’s resources. Early on a decision was made to retain what was possible of the existing building and work to ensure the relationship between the old and new could serve the brief of the client.
